The Crimean peninsula was annexed from Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February and March of 2014. In May of the same year, Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov was detained in Crimea and sentenced to 20 years in a Russian prison on charges of terrorism. Sentsov's extradition to Ukraine was denied in October 2016 on the grounds that he had become a Russian citizen upon the annexation. On May 14, 2018, Sentsov declared an indefinite hunger strike, stating that "the one and only condition for its termination is the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners that are currently present on the territory of the Russian Federation." Renowned filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (Maidan, Donbass, The Trial), joins Tanya Cooper from Human Rights Watch and Polina Kovaleva from PEN America to discuss actions to free Oleg Sentsov.

Sergei Loznitsa
Sergei Loznitsa was born in Belarus and raised in Ukraine. Many of his films have played the Festival, including the features My Joy (10) and In the Fog (12), and the documentaries Maidan (14), The Event (15), and Austerlitz (16). His two most recent films, Donbass (18) and The Trial (18), play the Festival this year.

Tanya Cooper
Tanya Cooper is the Ukraine researcher with the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch. She works on issues related to freedom of assembly, association, and expression, LGBT rights and discrimination. Cooper previously worked for Human Rights Watch's office in Moscow. Before joining Human Rights Watch, she worked as a casework coordinator for Amnesty International USA, as a human rights monitor with the UN in southern Kyrgyzstan, in the aftermath of interethnic violence there, and as Central Asia analyst for the International Crisis Group. Cooper is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), American University and Northern Kazakhstan State University. She speaks Russian and French.

Polina Kovaleva
Polina Kovaleva is the Eurasia Project Director at PEN America, based in New York. Originally from Russia, she came to New York from Paris, where she was with UNESCO’s Freedom of Expression and Media Development Division. For the last two years at PEN America, she has led the organization's work in advancing the celebration of literature and defense of free expression in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Central Asia. In 2017, PEN America gave its annual Freedom to Write Award to Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian writer and filmmaker imprisoned in Russia, and since then Polina has led a global coalition of advocates in a tireless campaign for his release.

Dorota Lech is a Doc Conference Programmer and Programming Associate at the Toronto International Film Festival. She is also the Industry Programmer at Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival, where she produces The Hot Docs Forum, a public pitching event aimed at garnering financing and co-productions for international documentaries.
