Star Wars The Force Awakens has shattered box office records left, right and centre, reigniting the audience’s passion for this cultural franchise icon that still succeeds regardless of how well it is made. Critics have labelled it derivative and unoriginal. Fans love the fact that it is just like the original films. But is that good enough? And why has the culture now become content with having the same old thing rather than the new? Steve and Ben take a look at the state of play in cinema and its relationship with today’s audience, specifically through the lens of these two huge blockbusters, and whether or not they are creating truly memorable experiences that qualify as hitting the cultural zeitgeist.
